If you needed to stash weapons, they had you covered there as well. The club had its own private plane to retrieve high-rollers, and the hotel converted an entire suite into a walk-in cooler to house the incredible amount of booze it required. Rudy Redbeard, so named for his red-dyed beard, docked his 58-foot yacht right in front of the club, and had women “actually kneeling before to kiss his ring and get a Quaalude.” His home included a bedroom “the size of most houses, and featured a grand piano on a rotating stage.” The Fourth Dimension and Nautical suites Dan Forerīusiness was so strong that Redbeard had “six rooms at the Mutiny blocked off for both business and pleasure, some of them adorned with paper grocery bags full of cash.” According to a hotel employee, the cleaning staff would fight about who would handle his rooms, knowing they might find “fist-sized chunks of hashish left in trash bins,” or a “giant rock of cocaine” in the carpet.Īs grandiose as the clientele was, The Mutiny was uniquely equipped to cater to their needs. Burton GoldbergĮarly on, one of the club’s highest rollers was Rodolfo “Rudy Redbeard” Rodriguez Gallo, a drug kingpin who kept his gun wedged in the seats of the club’s leather booths. “She kept bugging Pepe for more blow.” The Mutiny girls in 1976. “Liza Minnelli would not shut up for even a minute,” he said. A police officer named Wayne Black had an informant there wired, and hoped to get dirt on Pepe as he listened from a van across the street. Miami Dolphins majority owner Earl Smalley, Jr., Farzad writes, had a suite in the hotel overlooking the pool, and installed a “pink pneumatic bench that beach babes could saddle up on after long days on his speedboat.”Īnd when a Peruvian dealer named Pepe brought in high-quality cocaine he had “dyed light pink and spritzed to smell like bubble gum,” Liza Minnelli reportedly became such a fan that she inadvertently derailed surveillance on the club. There’s Paul Newman, swilling so much Chateau Lafite that he “had to be carried up to his suite by a hostess.” Ted Kennedy once got so drunk there that he picked a fight with the DJ. There’s Arnold Schwarzenegger, hitting on a waitress. The next night, the Cowboys lost the game by a touchdown to the Dolphins, and Dorsett, looking ragged after his wild night with Aguilar, had an especially poor showing.Ĭelebrities were everywhere. The Miami Dolphins were regular clients, as well as Dallas Cowboy running back Tony Dorsett, who spent one Sunday night partying hard with Aguilar. ‘You hear it, Nelson? What is that sound?! Nelson!’” Kingpin Nelson Aguilar with Rick James in 1983. At one point in the evening, Aguilar was “midcoitus with two women” when James, in the middle of a crack binge that fed his paranoia, “started banging frantically on his room door.” Their subsequent night of partying might have killed a mere mortal, but it was business as usual at a hotel and club known as The Mutiny, Miami’s home for drug kingpins and those who enjoyed their offerings. In 1983, shortly after Miami drug kingpin Nelson Aguilar got out of jail, he hooked up with his friend, funk star Rick James. With narcotics fueling at least one-third of Miami’s economy, the Mutiny was the country’s drug capital, swimming in so much illicit cash that the club sold “more bottles of Dom Perignon than any other establishment on the planet.” “The primate was partial to turtlenecks and a New York baseball cap, and proudly rode shotgun in his owner’s Benz while waving a Cuban cigar.”īut just as with salmon-colored jackets and shoes with no socks, Miami residents didn’t bat an eye at Caesar - it was all just part of the show.Īt the center of it all was the Mutiny at Sailboat Bay, an 130-room hotel and club that was Miami’s version of Studio 54, “a criminal free-trade zone of sorts where gangsters would both revel in Miami’s danger and escape from it,: Farzad writes. The most notorious member of the scene surrounding The Mutiny, the Miami nightclub that epitomized the excesses of the 1980s, was a chimp named Caesar.Īs Roben Farzad explains in his new book “ Hotel Scarface: Where Cocaine Cowboys Partied and Plotted to Control Miami” (Berkeley Hardcover), Caesar was the companion of drug kingpin Mario Tabraue, who adorned him “with a gold-rope necklace holding a 50-peso gold coin, an 18-karat ID bracelet with his name in diamonds and a ladies’ Rolex Presidential.

Studio is the same as Pro, but includes all the extra Instrument Packs.įor new purchasers (of any of the versions) there’s another crucial choice to make: which soundpack you want bundled with the instrument. Pro additionally lets you edit all the same stuff on a note-by-note basis (good for creatives and Cage-ophiles), mess with individual overtones, and exceed the other versions’ 48kHz max internal processing, right up to 192kHz. They all sound the same, but while Stage is more or less a ‘player’, with limited sound editing options, Standard adds the ability to tweak instrument design and voicing, adjust virtual miking and load external impulse responses in the on-board reverb. That’s true for all three versions of the product, which are Stage (€99), Standard (€249), Pro (€399) and Studio (€699). It runs as a stand-alone application and VST, AU or AAX plug-in, in Mac OS, Windows and Linux. Pianoteq, when maxed out with instrument packs (this one isn’t quite.), is a potent thing, covering a lot of sonic ground. Here’s a quick overview of how you acquire and equip Pianoteq, before we look more closely at the new features. So the package as a whole is looking more authoritative than ever. In fact though, Pianoteq wasn’t short of endorsements already: Grotrian and Blüthner had previously approved virtual versions of their pianos. It certainly reflects how far the technology has come, and how seriously it’s taken in the wider piano world. This kind of thing is becoming ever important in the virtual piano world, and actually it is quite a coup to have the blessing of arguably the most iconic piano manufacturer out there. This is the first version to be authorised by Steinway & Sons: specifically, the Model D and Model B instruments that already existed in Pianoteq 5. ![]() And there’s now the option to export audio files in FLAC or MP3, as well as WAV.įor some potential purchasers, though, I expect Pianoteq 6’s biggest draw will be not a feature addition or technical enhancement but an endorsement. And there’s also now a VST3-format plug-in version, and compatibility with the ARM architecture for Linux users.Īdditionally, there are some MIDI improvements, including an ‘always on’ event recorder in the stand-alone app. There’s a brand-new tuning section, to support historical temperaments, microtonal setups and more, without users having to get their hands dirty with Scala files. The underlying physical modelling has been refined, so that even long-standing instruments are said to have better “realism and acoustic presence”. Version 6 is improved in three main areas. What does Pianoteq 6 do that keeps it competitive? Ready In 6 The virtual piano market has never been more hotly contested. However, as Pianoteq has developed and improved, so has the sample-based opposition. And yet its fundamental nature has never changed: it doesn’t use samples at all, has a miniscule installation size (stand-alone and plug-in versions alike are about 50MB), and asks for no more than 256MB RAM. Along the way it’s turned its hand to not only acoustic pianos, but also historical fortepianos, Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Hohner electrics, as well as concert harps, steel drums and pitched percussion. Over its lifetime Pianoteq has improved steadily, from a proof-of-concept CPU-stretching upstart, to a rounded, refined, versatile and (most importantly) great-sounding virtual instrument. So it might come as a surprise, if you haven’t followed its development from the start, that Pianoteq is now 12 years old. Modartt’s modelled piano just keeps getting better.Īcoustic modelling instruments and plug-ins, which generate sounds from mathematical simulations of real materials, are still relatively thin on the ground, and can sometimes have a bit of a futuristic vibe. It also changes its backdrop and design depending on what type of instrument you’re playing. The user interface is by default quite compact, but scalable. There were rebellions against Ottoman rule, and Palestine even managed to win autonomy for a good while under the leadership of Daher al-‘Umar, however, it would eventually be crushed by Constantinople. With the advent of European-style nationalism and the weakening of the Ottoman state, the relations between the various ethnic groups and communities would fray. ![]() Towards the end of the life of the Ottoman empire, the latter was much more common than the former. However, as with any empire, there were times of peace and prosperity, as well as times of hardship and war. This attitude was also extended towards Christian Palestinians, where the keys of the Holy Sepulcher remain traditionally entrusted with a Muslim family to this day. Palestinian Muslims, perhaps uniquely so, were also in the habit of celebrating religious festivals in honor of the prophets and holy men of Judaism such as Reuben, son of Jacob. For example, the inscription on the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem reads “There is no God but Allah, and Abraham is his friend” in a nod to Christian and Jewish Ottomans, who like Muslims, are considered to be part of an Abrahamic religious tradition. Relations between the numerous religious groups in Palestine were generally stable and peaceful, nurtured by more than a millennium of coexistence and shared adversity. While this system suffered from serious flaws, and its breadth and tolerance waxed and waned with different governors and social and economic circumstances, it was still superior to the outright persecution and pogroms which various religious groups on the European continent had to endure. The Ottoman Millet system and its various manifestations provided a certain degree of autonomy to minority religious and ethnic communities. Palestinian Christians made up around 10 percent of the population, while Jewish Palestinians numbered around 25,000, mainly situated in Jerusalem, Hebron, Safad and Tiberius. The population of these three at the time would amount to approximately 600,000, the vast majority of which were Sunni Muslim. ![]() Rather the goal of this introduction is to describe the political context that lead up to the modern Palestinian question. This article does not aim to delve into the minutiae of this Palestinian history, indeed entire books could be -and have been- written on the subject. ![]() Unfortunately, this is the foundational myth of many reactionary ethno-nationalist ideologies.Īs elsewhere, over the millennia kingdoms rose and fell, religions were founded, wars both holy and unholy were waged, and peoples lived, mixed, moved and died out. For example, the impulse to imagine our ancestors as some closed-off, well-defined, unchanging homogeneous group having exclusive ownership over a territory that somehow corresponds to modern day borders has no basis in history. This is not the case, and we should be especially wary of imposing our modern conceptions on a context where they would be nonsensical. Today the nation state is so ubiquitous that many have come to internalize it as natural. For the vast majority of history, the concept of a nation state did not exist. Even Palestinian agricultural practices can be traced back to the Natufians -one of the peoples credited with inventing agriculture- who called Palestine and the fertile crescent their home, as far back as 9,000 BCE.īefore we continue, it is important to stress that when we talk about Palestine, we are not talking about a Palestinian nation state. These ancient influences can still be felt today in the idioms, vocabulary and toponymy used by its native Palestinian population. From Assyrian and Nabataean, to Persian and Roman -and many more- each influencing as well as being influenced by the rich cultural and civilizational mélange that defined the area. Throughout the ages, Palestine has been home to dozens of cultures, kingdoms and empires. First documented in ancient Egyptian tablets as Peleset over 3000 years ago, the region between the Mediterranean and the river Jordan has come to mean many different things to many different peoples. |
